Common Orthodontic Emergencies

Common Orthodontic Emergencies

Lost Separator

If you lose a separator, don’t worry. Call our office to determine if you need a replacement. Often, this can wait until your next visit, but it's best to check.

Sore Teeth/Discomfort

Manage soreness with acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers. Rinse with warm saltwater and use a warm washcloth or heating pad to relieve discomfort, especially after getting braces or adjustments.

Wire Irritations

Gently move the wire with a cotton swab or eraser. If it doesn't move, cover the end with cotton or wax to protect your mouth and reduce irritation.

Loose Bracket

Call our office to schedule an appointment to fix the loose bracket. Apply wax to the bracket to prevent irritation until your visit.

Loose Wire

Use sterilized tweezers to reposition the wire. If it won’t stay, cover the end with wax and contact us to determine if you need an immediate appointment.

Poking Wire

If a wire is poking and causing discomfort, try using a pencil eraser to push it into a more comfortable position. If this doesn’t work, apply orthodontic wax to the end of the wire to prevent it from irritating your mouth. Call our office to determine if you need an adjustment.

Broken Appliance

If any part of your orthodontic appliance breaks, such as a bracket, band, or wire, contact our office immediately. Avoid eating hard or sticky foods that could exacerbate the issue. Use orthodontic wax to cover sharp edges and prevent irritation until you can be seen.

Headgear Issues

Headgear may cause pain if not worn as directed. Ensure you wear it for the prescribed hours. If it feels uncomfortable or bent, contact us for an appointment rather than attempting to fix it yourself.

Loose Wire

Use sterilized tweezers to reposition the wire. If it won’t stay, cover the end with wax and contact us to determine if you need an immediate appointment.
